The Sunport Zoo is a fabulous place to learn, have fun, see new things, and have new experiences. Easy to get to from all the major highways, the Sunport Zoo also offers trolley service to the Sunport Downtown Beach on weekends. The zoo is fully handicapped accessible. Facilities Snack shacks, rest rooms, and air conditioned lounges are located throughout the grounds. Chauffeured golf carts are available for a premium, please reserve well in advance, at least one week. There are two restaurants that each offer indoor and outdoor seating. Picnic facilities are dispersed throughout the parking lot area and are equipped with barbecue grills. Three gift shops offer souvenirs, clothing, and educational materials. About the Exhibits Rainforest Our Rainforest exhibit is full of trees and plant life from rainforests around the world. One section of the exhibit includes boat-billed herons, and spoonbills in shallow waters. Nearby are tapirs, giant anteaters, and sloths. Other features animals are fruit bats, poison-dart frogs, water monitors, and various tortoises and turtles. A special section features tarantulas, leaf-cutter ants, centipedes, dead-leaf mantids, scorpions, and several other species. No rainforest display would be complete without crocodiles and pythons. New this year are the clouded leopard, ocelot, and the Bornean orangutan. Forest Wilderness This exhibit reproduces the forest wilderness of the mountains in the eastern United States. The exhibit include gray wolves, black bears, otters, cougars, elk, beavers, and whitetail deer. A herpetarium showcases various rattlesnakes, as well as snakes from other parts of the world, including the blue indigo and the rat snake. A special section features American bald eagles and golden eagles. New this year is a large facility that houses a small herd of bison. Aquarium The aquarium exhibit is split into three sections. The first section showcases beluga whales and bottlenose dolphins, with a dolphin show four times a day. The second section is devoted to tropical creatures, including stingrays, moray eels, anemones, clown fish, moon jellyfish, an octopus, trumpet fish, parrot fish, squirrel fish, and a variety of grunts and wrasses. A mini petting tank offers sea stars, urchins, crabs, and a nurse shark for petting. The third section houses walruses and sea lions. New this year in this section are emperor penguins. Petting Zoo The petting zoo exhibit is a wonderful place where adults and children can get close to some of our cutest critters. Food for feeding is offered from coin-operated machines and from attendants. One section contains our friendly goat herd, and another contains a sheep herd. Nearby are is a display of pigs with babies and another display of chickens, chicks, and an incubator with eggs. Our petting zoo section offers pony rides, as well as a stable of ponies to pet, brush, and nuzzle with. Another section has several kinds of cows and their babies. We also have several ferrets and a collection of frogs.
